Winter Time Roofing | Can it be Done!?

Winter Time Roofing | Can it be done?

Cold temperatures, less daylight and frozen fingers… A perfect way to describe wintertime roofing! Mike and Brody discuss the ups and downs of roofing in less-than-favourable conditions!

Roofing in the winter presents its own set of challenges and considerations, but it’s not impossible. While many homeowners and contractors may shy away from roofing projects during the colder months, it’s important to recognize that there are still possibilities for roofing work even when the temperatures drop.

Personally, I’ve been roofing year-round for over 10 years now. People are always surprised when I say we don’t slow down in the winter. The truth is roofs leak 24/7, and 365 days of the year. However, not all conditions are optimal to roof, no matter what time of year. Winter certainly provides far more challenges than any other season, and any roofer that tells you a full replacement in the wintertime is a fine idea is probably desperate for your money. Truth is you can do full re-roofs in the winter but you must be picky about the conditions, if you see a roofing crew in -30C, it’s not going well.

Winter time roofing also provides an opportunity to address specific issues that may become more apparent during winter months. For example, identifying and repairing leaks or insulation problems can help improve energy efficiency and prevent further damage caused by winter weather.

Additionally, roofing manufacturers have developed materials specifically designed for cold weather installations. These products, such as cold-weather adhesives and modified bitumen membranes, are formulated to withstand lower temperatures and provide reliable performance during winter installations. Working with a knowledgeable and experienced roofing contractor ensures the proper selection and installation of these specialized materials.
